Don’t celebrate Republic Day, Act it

Indian Republic Day 2010. January 26th. Kalwa, Mumbai.

I woke up the morning and it was Indian Republic Day, but I didn’t find much difference in the air in my room; it was the same. I got ready to go out and the air of freedom and celebration rushed into my nostrils and my love for the country was revoked. Seeing the little tricolored flags in the hands of little ones and the flags on shirts and faces everything was good in my eyes. I said “Thank God for this country and its Freedom”. And I saw few around a pole and the time I reached, there goes the “Tricolored Flag(Saffron, White, Green) with Saffron on the top and with the Chakra(Blue) in the middle” representing the Nation of Republic of India, flying in freedom in the morning breeze. My hands went up unknowingly and my eyes couldn’t hold the emotions in my heart and soul. Hot tears started rolling down cheeks remembering the ones who gave their soul for this Great Country, World’s Biggest Democratic Nation with the Highest Number of Native Cultures. And then raised the Anthem, Jana Gana Mana…..

After that I went to my home, and as I was cleaning the surroundings of my house after which I looked out to the unmaintained streets in many ways, and somehow the whole country came into eyes and the unclean streets throughout the country, and people moving ignoring it.

After that in deep sleep I dreamt “I was taking a walk and still the tricolors blurring my vision, small flags, big flags, pocket flags, plastic flags and you name it. As I was going my eyes fell on a man, and I looked into his eyes. It was white and only white. He was struggling to walk with a stick, with bruises, red stripe and wounds on his body, with a torn dress, and a torn trouser and which he probably doesn’t know for his world was full of darkness. Many passed with the flags by him and none had the courage or initiative to help or feed him.

And as I went forward, there was a crippled in rags trying to lifting him and see the flag hosting ceremony. None noticing him and they in their own world of celebration of Republic Day.

Later on I saw a leper with his unclean wound on his foot with worms in it and pus flowing out. Many pass by, look at his wound and close their nose and turn their face and walks away.

And did I see a teenager struggling to get out of the clutch of youngsters trying abuse her and many walks by them with the flag and none concerned or feared to respond.

Nearby was a woman by the roadside, alone, with naked breasts, feeding her child and a man snatching the child from the mother threatening to kill with a knife and takes the child. The mother, with her weak body tries to hold the man’s leg, but the man drags her causing wounds and pain all over her body. But the man forcefully takes the child away and the people just stands there and looks watching the scene.

Then I saw a young man walking with some money which he got as a gift. No sooner he entered the road, he was attacked and the money was taken stabbing the youngster. Blood splashed all over the place and drops fell on my face. I tried to wash it away, but it wasn’t going.

And I saw a small child with the father and mother fighting in the background, verbally abusing each other with words outside the child’s knowledge. The child closed her ears, and sooner it became a physical fight which the child saw and she ran way fearing. The Next I saw her jump from a high building giving up her life.“

I couldn’t stand it anymore and I woke up.

Is this Our Country?! I believe these things and even worse things happen in this Country of Ours. And I’ve seen few of these things in reality(the first ones) and I’ve noticed.

My friends, My Brothers & Sisters, when the day hits The Republic Day and Independence day in the Indian calendars, what are we doing?! Celebrating the Day in our own world or trying to make this country a better place to live.

I wonder, if Our Forefathers, the Leaders who led This Country to freedom was alive, what would they do? What would they say? Let us not anymore only Celebrate Republic and Independence Day, but ACT IT and make this country a better place to live in for everyone….

Jai Hind !!!! Mera Bharath Mahan !!!!!
